Inquiry Within!

The Wisconsin Historical Museum may still be closed, but our educators are ready to bring the museum experience to you! Focused on inquiry and aligned to the standards, each of the five museum programs delivers a powerful dose of Wisconsin history! Check out these testimonials:

“Short of being there in person, this opportunity was AMAZING!!!”

“We had our principal come in once we were up and going. She was absolutely stunned by the opportunity and how unique it was.”

- A Mississippian Mystery - Where did the museum’s Aztalan house come from? Students will learn how archaeologists use objects to reconstruct the past.

- The Mystery in the Mine - Who stole the miner’s tools? Students follow the clues to solve the mystery and learn what life was like for lead miners

- The Riddle of the Red Roses - Who put red roses on our suffrage display? Students will uncover the history of voting rights and women’s suffrage.

- Symbol Sleuths - Does the state flag really represent Wisconsin? Students will critically examine the flag’s symbols.

- Dr. Babcock's Mystery Machine - Students will piece together clues to discover how we became America’s Dairyland.

We look forward to "seeing" you!

Visiting the Sites & Museum in 2021

This season, we are excited to welcome visitors to Black Point Estate & Gardens, Circus World, Old World Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Historical Museum for general admission and special experiences. Click the button below for more information on how you can explore history in a new way through our 2021 programs and events.

First Capitol, H.H. Bennett Studio & Museum, Madeline Island Museum, Pendarvis, Reed School, Stonefield, Villa Louis, and Wade House Historic Site remain closed for public programming throughout the 2021 season due to temporary staff reassignments to help the frontline efforts of COVID-19 for the state of Wisconsin. While some of our team members are busy helping communities and families affected by COVID-19 around the state, we will continue to care for and invest in the physical infrastructure and collections at our historic sites. We look forward to welcoming you back to all of our historic sites and museums in 2022!

2021 COVID Poster Project! Attention High School Students! Attention All Artists!

The Wisconsin Historical Society will soon announce the launch of the next phase of its COVID-19 Poster Project with an open call for artwork. Wisconsin students who are interested in participating should complete an online submission form before the entry period ends on May 15, 2021. The project was first launched last year with the goal of sharing public health information related to the COVID-19 pandemic as interpreted by local artists.

The Wisconsin Historical Society will award $100 per commission to six Wisconsin high school students selected to participate in the second phase of the project. The posters will be unveiled this summer and one design will be highlighted on the Society’s website and social media channels every week through September 7, 2021. All commissioned artwork will become part of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s poster collection to be preserved for future generations.
