Fall is here-no tricks, only treats!

Thank you for being part of our education community! In this issue we highlight Hispanic Heritage Month. We're also looking for examples of civic education in the wild and for teachers interested in weighing in on the new Wisconsin History Center as we move forward with creating even more great resources!

Looking for a Few Good Civics Examples

The Wisconsin Historical Society Press is developing a new book on civics for upper elementary and middle schoolers. Do your students write letters to lawmakers? Hold voter registration drives? Complete service-learning projects? Participate in youth advisory groups? If young people in your community have found ways to make their voices heard and take action, we want to hear about it! Please get in touch with our editor of K-12 publications, Maria Parrott-Ryan, below!

The Wisconsin Historical Society is creating a hub of inspiration and exploration for PK-12 students, families, and communities. We cannot do this without you – the voices, needs, and ideas of educators from across the state will play a major role in shaping this new center of learning. In this phase, the educator council participants will:

  • Examine and envision initial gallery concepts and identify relevancies for teaching and learning.
  • Participate in at least one of three hour long virtual discussions, taking place outside of school hours between October 24 and November 4.
  • Share expertise and experiences from across grade bands, curricular areas, and schools. We welcome educators of all grades and subjects!
  • Participants will receive a $100 honorarium for each virtual meeting they actively participate in.

We welcome educators of all grades and subjects! Participants will receive a $100 honorarium for each virtual meeting they actively participate in. We will select and notify participants no later than October 21

Let us know if you want to participate by October 19 by using this link or emailing Abby Pfisterer, PK-12 Director of Education below!

October is Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with fantastic resources from the Wisconsin Historical Society!

"Somos Latinas" shares the powerful narratives of 25 activists from outspoken demonstrators to collaborative community-builders to determined individuals working for change behind the scenes. With grades 6-12 curriculum and an archive resource collection, it makes an excellent learning opportunity for your secondary classroom.

"Cris Plata: From Fields to Stage" details the life of Madison musician Cris Plata in both English and Spanish. This dual language book shares the Platas’ family story of migrant farming, music, and family amid the constant change and uncertainty of migrant life. While hardships—from poor working conditions and low wages to racial prejudice—were constant in Cris Plata’s upbringing, so too was the music that bonded and uplifted his family.

Celebrate Fall with a Classroom Visit to Wade House Historic Site!

Explore the horse-powered world that existed before planes, cars, and railroads. Your guide will take you to the 27-room Stage Coach Hotel. Then you’ll head to the historic sawmill and blacksmith shop to see firsthand how tools are made and used. Finally, put your knowledge to the test as you build a model in the Carriage Museum.
