WHAT'S NEW
History Maker Space Opens on Capitol Square Thank you to everyone who joined us earlier this month at the open house for the Society’s new History Maker Space on Capitol Square and the official launch of the new History Makers Tour! Together, the transition space and statewide tour position the Society to continue serving Wisconsin students and communities during the construction of the new Wisconsin History Center.
The History Maker Space will house pop-up exhibits, special events, history center sneak peeks and a refreshed retail shop, along with an interactive education space. The space is located on the main level of the US Bank Plaza on Capitol Square and began hosting school groups into the expanded education space last month.
With generous support from Culver’s, the Society is also reaching communities across all 72 counties through the new History Makers Tour that is traveling the state, region by region, until February 2027. We look forward to bringing pop-up exhibits, artifact displays, author talks, special events and more directly to your constituents.
State Building Commission Authorizes Construction of New History Center The Wisconsin History Center project reached a big milestone yesterday when the State Building Commission approved the Society’s request for authorization to construct the new facility. This approval sets the stage for the demolition and construction phase of the project to begin and was made possible thanks to longstanding bi-partisan support from Wisconsin legislators. Demolition is slated to begin in early 2024 and
construction is expected to kick off in late 2024 and take just over two years to complete.
When finished, the Wisconsin History Center will be a vibrant addition to the state’s civic infrastructure for school students, educators, families and history enthusiasts. It will also drive tourism dollars to Wisconsin by providing access to one of the nation’s most significant historical collections. The center is expected to welcome more than 200,000 visitors annually and will allow the Society to double the number of students served to about 60,000 each year! We appreciate your continued support for this transformative project. Click here to read the full press release.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: OCTOBER 26
On this date Lewis Cass, governor of the Michigan Territory, declared the first counties in Wisconsin. The counties included Michilimackinac (all areas drained by Lake Superior tributaries), Brown, and Crawford counties, which were separated through Portage. Michilimackinac County is now part of the state of Michigan.
